About violintuner.app
A free violin tuner that works in the browser.
violintuner.app is for violin, viola and cello players, and for parents of young players, who want to tune quickly without installing an app. It is a sister site of Online Guitar Tuner and Online Bass Tuner and uses the same pitch engine.
How it works
The tuner reads blocks of sound from your microphone and measures the pitch with the YIN algorithm (de Cheveigné and Kawahara, 2002), refined with parabolic interpolation. It searches from 55 Hz to 1400 Hz, which covers the cello low C (65.41 Hz) and the violin E (659.26 Hz). A median of the latest readings keeps the needle steady, and within 5 cents counts as in tune. In automated tests with synthetic string-like tones, every string of every preset was read within 2 cents.
The reference tones are synthesised in the browser with the Karplus-Strong plucked-string method. No sound files are downloaded.
