Violin Tuner for Teachers
Tune the whole string class on the classroom screen. No login, no ads.
The first minutes of a string lesson often go to tuning. One pupil’s peg has slipped, another’s E string is flat, and a beginner cannot yet hear whether the note is too high or too low. Violintuner.app is an online violin tuner that runs in the browser on the classroom computer, the smartboard or a pupil’s own phone. Open the page, press Start tuner and play an open string. There is no account, nothing to install and no ads.
What you get
- A microphone tuner for violin, viola and cello. Press Start tuner, allow the microphone and bow one open string. The tuner shows the nearest string, how many cents you are off, and In tune when the needle is in the centre. Pick Viola or Cello above the gauge for C G D A.
- A = 440 or 442. Tap 442 and all string targets move up together, so the class can match the piano or the orchestra you play with. See A = 440 or 442 Hz.
- Reference tones, no microphone needed. Tap G, D, A or E to hear the note, with volume, Loop every 4 seconds and Play one octave higher (for small speakers), which helps with thin laptop speakers. See violin reference tones.
- Guides pupils can read themselves: how to tune a violin, fine tuners and pegs and tuning 1/2 and 3/4 violins (same notes, smaller size).
Projector mode
Press Projector mode under the tuner and it fills the screen on a black, high-contrast background, with a very large note name, a large needle and a large cents display, so the whole class can follow from the back of the room. When a string is in tune, the note, the needle and the message turn green and the text says ✓ In tune, so it does not rely on colour alone. The instrument buttons and 440/442 still work. Press Esc or ✕ to leave. If the browser does not allow full screen, the projector view fills the browser window instead. The tuner remembers the setting in this browser only.
Lesson ideas
Tune together on the board
Put the tuner on the projector and let one pupil at a time bow an open string while the class watches the needle. Pupils learn to read “too low / too high” before they can hear it.
Ear first, then check
Play the A with Loop every 4 seconds, let pupils tune by ear, then check each one with the microphone tuner. Over time, the tuner becomes the check rather than the crutch.
Fine tuner or peg?
Use the fine tuners and pegs guide to show which to turn. Small corrections on the fine tuner, larger ones on the peg, with the teacher’s help for beginners.
Mixed string groups
In a group with violins, violas and cellos, switch the preset for each section so everyone tunes to the right strings.
Practice at home
Pupils can open the same page on a phone at home, so they start practice in tune and you know what they are using.
Tips for a noisy classroom
The tuner reads one note at a time, so tune one instrument at a time. Bow evenly at a steady, moderate speed, and hold the phone or laptop about half a metre from the instrument (as the tuner page advises). Plucking works too, but the note fades quickly.
Privacy
- No account, no login and no pupil data. No ads and no tracking.
- The browser only gives the page microphone access after you allow it. Sound is analysed on the device; nothing is recorded, saved or uploaded, and the microphone switches off when you press Stop or leave the page. See privacy.
Questions and answers
Do pupils need an account?
No. Open the page and press Start tuner.
Does it work on school tablets and Chromebooks?
The tuner uses the standard microphone access built into current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers, tablets and phones. The device needs a microphone, and you must allow access when the browser asks. Some school-managed devices block the microphone in their settings; then ask your IT administrator, or use the reference tones, which need no microphone.
Can it tune viola and cello?
Yes. Pick Viola or Cello above the gauge; both are tuned C G D A.
Does it work for 1/2 and 3/4 violins?
Yes. Small violins use the same notes, G D A E.
Should the class tune to 440 or 442?
Use 440 unless your piano or orchestra uses another pitch; then tap 442.
Is the sound recorded?
No. It is analysed on the device and never saved or sent.
Is it free?
Yes, with no ads.
